On Sunday 20 May we have the pleasure to host Veronica Toumanova for a couple of workshop in Cambridge. Veronica has been highly recommended by several of the best Tango dancers in Europe. She is well known for her Tango essays which have been translated to 16 languages. She recently published a collection of nineteens essays in a book called WHY TANGO.

12pm-1:30pm. Workshop 1. Posture, balance and free leg movement. When we start dancing tango we often are confronted with the fact that even simply walking with our partner is far from being as easy as it looks. And in reality just walking together in close embrace is something that you have to learn over time, putting a lot of practice into small but important details. When we walk in tango we often have problems with posture and balance, which makes it even harder to comfortably connect to the music and to the other person. This is why it is important to work on your individual technique in order to improve your dance in couple. In this class we will work on understanding and establishing the correct posture for yourself according to your preferred role, finding balance and grounding yourself on the floor. With the help of the standing leg you will then be able to liberate and relax the free leg in order to create a good leg projection in the steps. We will work on how to make your movements light and dynamic and not to lose balance while walking. We will also see how listening and moving to the music can help you with your technique in dance.

2:00pm-3:30pm. Workshops 2. Leading, following and connection. With a strong functional posture and grounding established in the first workshop, we will now look into what does it mean to lead and follow in tango. How can we create and maintain connection both in open and close embrace? This workshop will focus on using our movement to communicate with the partner according to the role of your choice. This class will include communication and connection exercises allowing you to explore the topic in more depth, understand its underlying physical andi intentional mechanisms and clarify the fuzzy statements often taught in tango such as “lead with your chest”, “do not lead with your arms” and “stop thinking, follow”. We will establish a clear understanding of the role of body movement in lead/follow dynamics and the precise function of the embrace in this communication. We will also see how our musicality can facilitate the connection between partners.
